The national system for evaluation, quality assurance, and accreditation of universities operates in alignment with the standards and guidelines for quality assurance in higher education across the European Higher Education Area. It is structured around internal evaluation within each university, external evaluation, and the accreditation of institutions and degree programmes.
The Self‑Assessment, Periodic Evaluation, and Accreditation system (AVA) encompasses all activities required by law for implementing initial and periodic accreditation of study programmes and university sites; periodic evaluation of the quality, efficiency, and outcomes achieved by universities; and the strengthening of internal quality‑assurance processes concerning teaching and research activities.
The National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes (ANVUR) is responsible for defining and overseeing the national evaluation system.
